Over 18,000 polling stations to be set up for 2018 local elections in Belarus

More than 18,000 polling stations will be established in Belarus for the elections to the local councils of deputies due in 2018, BelTA learned from the website of the Belarusian Central Election Commission.

In particular, 2,962 polling stations will be set up in Brest Oblast, 3,112 in Vitebsk Oblast, 3,584 in Gomel Oblast, 2,389 in Grodno Oblast, 3,451 in Minsk Oblast, 2,556 in Mogilev Oblast, and 57 in Minsk. The total amount of polling stations in Belarus will reach 18,111.

This means that this will be the number of deputies to be elected in 2018.

The upcoming elections to local councils of deputies are to take place on 20 February 2018 at the latest. The Central Election Commission suggested holding them on 18 February. The president is to take the final decision and sign a relevant decree. If the elections are scheduled for 18 February, the election campaign shall start If start three months earlier (on 18 November at the latest).

After the announcement of the date, the first stage will be the establishment of 1315 territorial commissions. Then, commissions will be set up for oblast councils and Minsk. The nomination of candidates for the elections will begin afterwards. The candidates are traditionally nominated by political parties, workers' associations, and citizens by means of signature collection.
