Despite the efforts of law enforcement agencies to improve the level of public protection from road traffic injuries, the situation on the region's roads remains complex.
The main causes of fatalities are head-on collisions of vehicles, which are causally linked to violations of speed limits and overtaking rules.
When driving on the road, a driver must remember that a car is a means of increased danger, and not only their life but also the lives of other road users depend on the driver's actions and strict adherence to traffic rules. Choosing a speed that does not correspond to road conditions and violating overtaking rules are the most frequent causes of traffic accidents. Correctly choosing the vehicle's speed is one of the most important conditions for safe driving. The speed of a car can vary within a wide range. In accordance with the requirements of the Traffic Regulations, when choosing a speed, the driver must take into account the speed limits established by these Regulations and traffic management devices, as well as traffic intensity, road visibility, the characteristics and condition of the vehicle and its load, road and weather (meteorological) conditions, and other factors that reduce atmospheric transparency and affect road visibility in the direction of travel.
As the speed of movement increases, the process of driving a car becomes more complex and requires greater effort and attention, and consequently, the probability of traffic accidents also increases. The speed at which it is safe to move in a specific situation should depend on the ability to stop the vehicle when an obstacle or hazard arises.
Drivers should exercise particular caution when choosing their speed on slippery surfaces, where even slight but sudden braking or acceleration can lead to skidding. Safety of movement on such roads can be ensured by significantly reducing speed.
When approaching a turn, one must firmly remember that it is better to reduce speed before entering the turn than to brake while navigating it. It is not advisable to disengage or shift gears during a turn. If the turn is sharp and requires shifting gears at its end, it is better to do so at the beginning of the turn. Braking and disengaging the clutch during a turn can lead to skidding.
When selecting driving speed modes, drivers must strictly adhere to the requirements of the Traffic Regulations, not exceed the speed limits set by relevant road signs, as well as the maximum speed determined by the technical specifications of the vehicle.
