Autonomous fire alarm - effective and reliable protection for your home!

From November 24 to December 14, a large-scale information campaign on the effectiveness of autonomous smoke detectors (ASDs) and the necessity of their installation in households will be held in the republic. During this campaign, events will be organized in work collectives and retail outlets. By the way, thanks to autonomous smoke detectors, 47 people, including 12 children, have already been saved in the 10 months of the current year. In 2024, thanks to ASDs, 93 people were saved, including 21 children.

❓ "How and where to properly install an autonomous smoke detector if the house has a stretch ceiling?"

An autonomous smoke detector (ASD) is an automatic device that combines in one housing:

- a fire detection sensor (usually reacting to smoke),

- an audible alarm,

- an autonomous power source (a "Krona" type battery).

It does not require connection to external systems: the ASD can independently detect signs of fire and immediately alert nearby people with a loud audible signal.

In case of fire, smoke rises to the ceiling and then spreads along it, so the most preferable location for the detector is on the ceiling in the middle of the room. However, in a situation with a stretch ceiling, it will not be possible to simply attach it.

☝The installation of an autonomous fire detector must be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations specified in the operating documentation (passport). An alternative placement on the wall is possible. The detector can be mounted on a vertical surface – at a height of 10–30 cm from the ceiling.

❌ Also, when installing an autonomous fire detector, it must be taken into account that it cannot be placed closer than 50 cm to the corners of the room. This is because the junctions of walls are the least ventilated areas, and smoke reaches them much later, which can delay the device's activation. In addition, avoid installation near windows, ventilation, and air conditioners. Air currents can carry smoke away from the sensor, preventing its timely activation.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations recommends installing autonomous fire detectors in every residential room. The flashing red LED on the detector's body indicates its serviceability and standby mode. Upon detecting smoke, the detector emits an intermittent audible alarm with a constant red LED light. To stop the detector's audible alarm, eliminate the source of smoke and ventilate the room.

During the operation of the fire alarm device (FAD), it is necessary to perform technical maintenance, which consists of cleaning the detector's optical system using a hairdryer on a cold setting at maximum power. Without disassembling the detector, direct the air stream onto the protective mesh of the optical element. The cleaning frequency should be at least once a year and after each false alarm. It is also necessary to regularly replace the "Krona" power source. The FAD will indicate when it is time to do this by emitting a continuous short audible signal.
