Since the beginning of the current year, 5 traffic accidents involving cyclists have been registered in the Vitebsk region, in which 4 people died and 1 person was injured.

In this regard, on May 11, 2022, a set of preventive measures "Be Safe!" will be carried out in our district, aimed at preventing traffic accidents involving cyclists and persons using personal mobility devices.

A cyclist, like a driver, must observe traffic rules and remember the responsibility that lies with them.

According to the Traffic Rules, cycling is permitted from the age of 14 on a bicycle path, and in its absence – on the roadside, sidewalk, or pedestrian path, without creating obstacles for the safe movement of pedestrians.

Cyclists are prohibited from:

• riding without holding the handlebars or without keeping their feet on the pedals;

• carrying passengers, except for carrying children under 7 years of age in an additional specially equipped seat;

• carrying cargo that extends more than 0.5 meters in length or width beyond the dimensions, or cargo that interferes with control;

• turning left or making a U-turn on roads with tram traffic and on roads with more than one lane of traffic in the given direction (in this case, you must dismount and cross the road at a pedestrian crossing);

• towing a bicycle and being towed by a bicycle, except for a commercially manufactured bicycle trailer.

When riding on the road at night and in conditions of insufficient visibility, the bicycle must be equipped with: a front lamp emitting white light, and a rear lamp emitting red light.

When crossing the roadway at a pedestrian crossing, the cyclist must lead the bicycle next to them and be guided by the requirements provided for by the Rules for pedestrian traffic.

The State Automobile Inspectorate urges all road users to strictly observe the Traffic Rules. Car drivers need to be more attentive to cyclists, as traffic accidents involving them

have the most severe consequences. Drivers of "two-wheeled" vehicles must study and strictly adhere to traffic rules and personal safety measures.
