We are rescuers – descendants of the victors | Glubokoye District Executive Committee

In the Year of Historical Memory, rescuers of the Vitebsk region continue a new project about family members of rescuers who participated in the Great Patriotic War, "We are rescuers: descendants of the victors." Gulashko Alexey, head of the duty shift of the fire and rescue unit No. 1 of the Glubokoe District Department for Emergency Situations, proudly spoke about his great-grandfather, Lastovsky Pyotr.

My great-grandfather, LASTOVSKY Pyotr Karlovich, a private, was awarded the Order of the Great Patriotic War, II degree, and the medals "For Courage," "For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945," and "For the Capture of Berlin."

Lastovsky Pyotr Karlovich was born on January 1, 1920, in the village of Lapishki, Glubokoe district, Vileyka region, Belarusian SSR. He was drafted into the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army and sent to the front in 1944. He served as a rifleman in the 1201st Rifle Regiment, awarded the Order of Suvorov.

During the victorious march in the spring of 1945, Pyotr Karlovich distinguished himself with a heroic act. Specifically, on April 21, 1945, during another enemy counterattack near the village of Kurov in the territory of modern-day Poland, Private Lastovsky P.K. displayed exceptional courage and bravery. He took up a convenient position and, letting the attacking group of German soldiers approach, opened fire with a captured "Faustpatrone" at a decisive moment, destroying 21 German soldiers. As a result, the enemy's counterattack was repelled, and the captured line was held.

After the end of the Great Patriotic War, Pyotr Karlovich returned to his homeland, where he lived his entire life working in agriculture.
