Domestic violence is a cycle of physical, verbal, spiritual, and economic abuse that repeats with increasing frequency, aimed at controlling, intimidating, and instilling fear in one family member by another or others; situations in which one person controls or attempts to control the behavior and feelings of another.
How can you avoid becoming a victim of a domestic tyrant? What should you do if violence is already occurring in your family?
1. If a critical situation arises, try to leave the apartment immediately.
2. If the abuse is systematic, you should pack the most essential items in advance and leave them in a safe place – with relatives or friends.
3. Always keep your documents, keys, and money in a place where you can quickly grab them when leaving the apartment.
4. Ask neighbors you trust the most to call the police if they hear screams from your apartment.
5. If you cannot leave the apartment, you must:
lock yourself in a room and try to call the police;
call friends or neighbors and ask them to come to your aid;
loudly call for help;
open the windows, try to attract the attention of passers-by and ask them for help.
6. If you
if you manage to get out of the house, shout and call for help. Even if no one comes out, at least it might deter the attacker, and you will have witnesses to the incident in case you later report to the police.
