IOM Director General: Belarus leads fight against slave trade
Belarus is at the forefront of fighting human trafficking, Director General of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Brunson McKinley told media after meeting with Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Martynov on September 18. Brunson McKinley underscored that Belarus sets a good example of bilateral and multilateral cooperation with the International Organisation for Migration. The country plays an important role in IOM efforts in several areas. In particular, quite fruitful cooperation has been established in the counteraction of slave trade and the preparation for introducing biometric passports. “Meanwhile, there are a lot of areas we could expand the cooperation in,” believes the official. Brunson McKinley spoke appreciatively about activities of the international centre for training and re-education of migration and slave trade counteraction personnel. The centre was opened in Minsk in 2007 with IOM assistance. As the CIS basic educational establishment the centre has a good potential and will continue developing in the future, Brunson McKinley is convinced.
