Lukashenko wants prosecution agencies to tighten supervision of law enforcement bodies
MINSK, 24 August (BelTA) – Belarus’ President Alexander Lukashenko has heard out a report by Prosecutor General of Belarus Grigory Vasilevich on 24 August, BelTA learnt from the presidential press service. The President was briefed on the measures to prevent and eradicate crime. Over the seven months this year, the number of grave crimes reduced by 11%; of them the number of murders fell by 20%, grave bodily injuries by 12%, robberies by 14%, juvenile delinquency by 13%. At the same time, some problems remain a matter of serious concern. The recidivism rate has not fallen, which attests to inadequate measures taken by the prosecution agencies to coordinate crime prevention efforts as well as failures in the work of law enforcement bodies and local executive and regulatory agencies. The number of plunders remains at the last year’s level. This year the public prosecution office enhanced supervision of controlling agencies: it initiated 742 cases and brought to responsibility 378 officials. The head of state was informed about the work to improve criminal sentencing and penal policy. The President ordered to scale up efforts to design the relevant concept and urged to adopt a more balanced approach to awarding sentences punishable by imprisonment and use fines more often. Alexander Lukashenko ordered the prosecution agencies to tighten supervision over the execution of laws by all law enforcement and controlling bodies and sharpen focus on the rights and freedoms of citizens.
