Belarus in top 15 on UPU Integrated Index for Postal Development

Belarus is in top 15 among 172 countries on the UPU 2022 Integrated Index for Postal Development, Svetlana Shimanskaya, head of the postal service department at the Belarusian Ministry of Communications and Informatization, said at a press conference, BelTA has learned.

"Today is World Post Day. Since 1947, Belarus has been a full member of the Universal Postal Union, an international intergovernmental organization that has the status of a specialized agency of the United Nations. The Universal Postal Union unites 192 countries. Membership in the UPU enables our country to exchange international mail between all member countries using common technologies. It also ensures the freedom of transit of postal items through the territory of other countries," Svetlana Shimanskaya said.

The Communications and Informatization Ministry is the body of state administration in charge of cooperation with the Universal Postal Union in Belarus.

"During the UPU Congress in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire in 2021, Belarus was elected member of the IPU Council of Administration and also won a seat in the UPU Council of Administration's Committee 4 (Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance). It considers and implements Congress decisions concerning technical cooperation, helps to reduce the ‘postal divide' between industrialized and developing countries and enables the transfer of know-how,” she noted

According to her, Belarus ranks 15th out of 172 countries on UPU Integrated Index for Postal Development, and first - among the CIS countries.
