UN praises Belarus’ efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions

The UN positively assessed the results achieved by Belarus in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

A multilateral assessment of Belarus' national reporting took place in Bonn, Germany as part of the 60th sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SB 60) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) . In addition to our country, Austria, Greece, Denmark, Cyprus, the Czech Republic and Denmark presented their reports at the morning session.

Under the UNFCCC, Belarus committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10% of the 1990 level by 2020. In reality, our country managed to achieve 39%.

The reporting also included the planned policies and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the Paris Agreement.

“The head of the Belarusian delegation pointed in her speech to the negative impact of unilateral restrictive measures on Belarus' fulfillment of its commitments, as well as on increasing the ambition which is necessary to achieve the global goal of climate change mitigation and adaptation. After the reporting, members of the Belarusian delegation answered additional questions from representatives of China, Saudi Arabia and Brazil. The results achieved by our country in reducing greenhouse gas emissions were positively assessed by the participants of the session,” the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment said.
