Construction of sport facilities in Vitebsk Oblast continues

The construction of sports facilities is ongoing in Vitebsk Oblast, deputy chairman of the Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee Vladimir Terentyev said after the ceremony to open the Vitebsk Regional Olympic Training Center of Martial Arts in the Vitebsk neighborhood Zhurzhevo, BelTA has learned.

"The construction of new sports facilities never stops. This year we opened the big ice arena in Orsha. A multifunctional complex with a swimming pool was put into operation in Dokshitsy last winter. Next year we will complete the construction of a health and fitness facility in Ushachi. The construction of the swimming pool in Gorodok continues,” Vladimir Terentyev said. He added that in ski and roller track in Gorodok is being upgraded.

“In the run-up to the New Year, local athletes received a good present – a multifunctional center of martial arts. Over the years, about Br25 billion has been invested in the project. The center has perfect conditions for practicing Taekwondo, boxing, Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling and other types of wrestling. There is a hall for rhythmic gymnastics,” said Vladimir Terentyev.

The Vitebsk Regional Olympic Training Center of Martial Arts was established in January 2014. It specializes in several sports (boxing, freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, judo, Taekwondo, kickboxing and Thai boxing). The center has 104 students, of which 44 are members of national teams of Belarus. The center is run by the famous Belarusian and Soviet wrestler, world and European champion, Olympic silver medalist Igor Kanygin. The main objective of the center is to provide decentralized training and ensure successful performance of students at the national and international competitions. The center occupies the premises which formerly belonged to the Zhurzhevo military base (it used to house a community center and a gym). In 2008, the building was transferred into ownership of the Vitebsk regional advanced sport school.
