Remains of 26 Soviet soldiers to be re-interred in Beshenkovichi 1 July

VITEBSK, 30 June (BelTA) – A ceremony of re-interring the remains of 26 Red Army soldiers killed during the Great Patriotic War will be held in Beshenkovichi on 1 July, BelTA learnt from the ideology department of the regional executive committee. Attending the ceremony will be relatives of one of the soldiers whose remains were identified. The remains of the soldiers were found by servicemen of the 52nd special search battalion during search operations in the region. The identity of Usman Nurin, born 1908, a native of the Gorodishchi region, Penza oblast, was established owing to a medallion. His son and grandchildren will come over from Russia’s Penza oblast to Belarus for the ceremony. The remains of the soldiers will be buried in the mass grave in Beshenkovichi. Around 2,000 Soviet soldiers were killed in the battles in the Beshenkovichi region, but these are not final estimates, the local history researchers say a. For the Western Dvina River crossing operation in the Beshenkovichi region and also for the development of the beachhead ahead of the Bagration offensive, 150 soldiers and officers were awarded the high title of the Hero of the Soviet Union. Twenty-five of them were buried in the mass graves in the region.
