Vitebsk street named in honour of 70th anniversary of oblast foundation

One of the Vitebsk streets has been named in honour of the 70th anniversary of the Vitebsk oblast foundation. A memorial plaque will be fixed at one of the houses in the street connecting Moskovsky Prospect and Gazeta Pravda Street, BelTA learnt from Mikhail Kuzmich, the head of the ideology department of the Vitebsk oblast executive committee. The oblast center will also name a park in honour of the 70th anniversary of the Vitebsk oblast. The park has been beautified with a red oak ally made by veterans, BRUY activists and members of the public. Mikhail Kuzmich noted that numerous actions took place in line with the oblast remarkable event. Among them are honouring the foremost workers and oblast best collectives, hosting scientific conferences, exhibitions, cultural events and sports competitions. The oblast also printed a book “On the way of innovation development. Scientists – Vitebsk oblast natives”, renovated memorial plaques and monuments devoted to the most important events in the Belarusian history and governmental figures that were born in the Vitebsk oblast. A concert marking the 70th anniversary of the oblast will take place on January 18. Founded on January 15, 1938, the Vitebsk oblast was divided into 20 regions, 311 rural councils, seven towns, 17 places, four working settlements. Today’s oblast includes 21 regions, 212 rural and settlement councils, 23 towns, 24 town settlements. The oblast was conferred the Lenin medal in 1967 for the active participation in the partisan movement, courage and heroism in combating against the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War, for successes in restoring and developing the national economy. In line with the presidential decree, the Vitebsk oblast alongside the Gomel, Minsk and Mogilev oblasts has been awarded the honorary state banner of the Republic of Belarus in recognition of its high achievements in the economic development.
